Matter
Matter is all around us.
Everything on Earth and even in the solar system is made up of matter
We are made of matter, too.
MATTER IS EVERYTHING WE TOUCH,
TASTE OR SMELL THAT HAS MASS AND VOLUME
The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
Solids have definite shape and volume
Liquids don’t have a definite shape, but they have a definite volume.
Gases don’t have a definite shape and they don’t have a definite
volume.
CHANGES IN MATTER
Matters have three forms: solid, liquid and gas.
Matters have two kinds of changes:
1.- Physical change when the
matter changes state or shape, but the
matter continues being the same.
Physical changes can happen when we heat, bend, twist, stretch, squash,
freeze a substance)
2.- Chemical changes when new substances are produced.
MIXTURES
Most things around us are mixtures.
A mixture is something that contains two or more substances
We can classify mixtures as heterogeneous or homogeneous.
In heterogeneous mixtures is easy to see the different substances (fruit
salad).
In homogenous mixture you can’t see the different substances
(mayonnaise)
PROPPERTIES OF MATERIALS
Materials have different properties.
A resistance material is difficult to break (wood).
A fragile material is easy to break (glass).
A rigid material is difficult to bend (metal).
A flexible material is easy is to bend (rubber)
An elastic material returns to its original shape.
Transparent materials let the light pass through them.
Waterproof materials don’t let the water pass through them
Heat conductors let heat pass through them
Heat insulators don’t let heat pass through them.
